TERM 3 OVERVIEW
Intermediate (Grade 6) Curriculum Content
Third Term: March 2016 – June 2016

HUMANITIES
LANGUAGE ARTS
*Integrated with all other subjects requiring written expression. This includes Creative Writing, Writing Projects, research, and reading of narrative and informational texts.
1. Creative Writing:
Writing: will build skills in writing compositions, learning purpose, form, composition, and publication
*Compositions covered are: Narrative (stories), Recounts (journal entries, letters, and reflections), Procedure (Recipes), Poems (Haiku and Tanka), and Report (Country information)
2. Writing and Bookmaking: Using 6 + 1 Writing Traits
a) 6+1: learning, studying, and practicing the six main writing traits (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions)
b) Book: building skills in writing and illustrating books, sentence and paragraph compositions, research, and publication skills
*Students will complete the Take a Vacation unit, during which they will create a book that plans a trip to a country of their choice. This project encompasses many areas of the curriculum (Art, Social Studies, Math, H.A.C.E., Reading, and Physical Education), with a large focus on Writing.
c) Planning: proofreading, editing, content, grammar, spelling, and presentation
3. Reading:
a) Reading and Technology:
*students will read (a) novel(s) of their choosing and focus on integrating technology with reading
comprehension, recognizing main ideas and supporting details, extracting required information, and deeper-level thinking reading responses
b) Literature Circles
*class discussions, re-tell, opinion and explanation, oral and silent reading, Socratic circles,
Reading Power activities, visual interpretations, quote selection and analysis, theme, plot, setting,
and character activities, response journals, and a final project
* the three Grade 6 classes will be in mixed groups for our literature circles unit
c) Reading Comprehension and Sequencing Activities
d) Novels: Recreational and Informational Books
*students choose from a wide variety of novels to read daily
e) Reading Power: continuing to learn and practice the strategies of Connect, Question, Visualize, Infer, and Transform
FRENCH (with Mrs. Weststrate):
Our theme in French this term will be 'les animals'. Students will continue to use the verbs 'avoir' and 'etre' while writing simple French sentences. Our culminating activity will be creating an animal puppet show, en français.
SOCIAL STUDIES: Text: Global Citizens
* Students will be reading, having classroom discussions, answering questions, completing projects, and showing deeper understanding of countries around the world and how they differ from Canada.
a)Japan: students will be learning about Japan through various station activities, as well as classroom and textbook discussions
b)Take a Vacation: this writing unit ties into social studies as students learn about their chosen country’s culture (religion, beliefs, customs, clothing, art, food, history, stories, language…), background, geography, and more.

FINE ARTS:
1. Art: This subject is not a focus for the third term. However, we will complete some art assignments. Students will engage in art activities around the concepts of colour, line, design, shape, tone, balance, and contrast. They will also use a variety of techniques, as well as different mediums, including felts, pencil crayons, tissue paper, paint, soapstone, and paper mache to create different projects this term.
2. Music: Students will continue with the acoustic guitar, ending with a performance at a school assembly (date to be determined). For the End of Year Celebrations, students will be encouraged to "show their stuff" by performing on their own or in small groups for their class.
3. Drama: Students will participate in mime activities, role-playing skits, and a group play. There will be a concentration on voice projection, as well as face and body expression. Students have expressed ideas and emotions using verbal and non-verbal communication, maintained focus within a drama structure, demonstrated commitment to roles, and applied audience skills to a variety of presentations.
Health and Career Education (H.A.C.E.):
1. Assignments: Student will complete assignments that have them focus on developing social awareness and communication skills, as well as conflict resolution.
2. Homework Completion: Student are expected to show responsibility and personal organization by having their homework completed on time
3. Agenda and Test Signatures: Students are expected to complete their agenda accurately each day, and have a parent initial it to show that their homework has been completed.
4. Personal Organization: Student are expected to keep their desk and coat room area tidy, return forms on time, and have their binders and work kept in an orderly manner.
5. Genius Hour & Passion Projects: Students are setting goals for learning about a topic that they are passionate about. Through exploration and experience, this project will help them to work on big ideas from the new curriculum.

Mathematics: Text: Math Makes Sense
1. Field Trip to Space P.B.L. (continued):
Geometry and Measurement – Exploring triangles, naming and sorting triangles by angles, drawing triangles, investigating polygons, congruence in regular polygons, perimeters of polygons, area of a rectangle, and volume of a rectangular prism
Note: in this PBL we will also be reviewing decimals and money
2. Angles and Polygons – Naming angles, exploring angles, measuring angles, drawing angles, investigating
angles in a triangle, and investigating angles in a quadrilateral
3. Plan a Class Field Trip P.B.L.:
- Reviewing decimal operations, graphing, and mathematical expressions

- A Take a Vacation package has been sent home and students have one here at school.
- We will be working through the tasks one at a time, each with its own due date.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION:
- Minor Games: general throwing, catching, aiming, sending and receiving skills; these skills, as well as group games and sportsmanship, will be focused on.
- Gymnastics: students will work on developing their skills in the areas of tumbling, balance, ropes, climbing, and bars.
- This year, students will work on developing their skills working with the staff from Lake Country Gymnastics.
- Dance: students will learn a variety of traditional folk dances from around the world. They will learn specific steps, as well as how to count time and experience rhythm. They will work cooperatively, in partners and as a class, to create a fantastic finished product. These dances will be performed at our Take a Vacation celebration in June.
- Students will also learn some modern and country dances, as well as dances from Just Dance.
- Softball: batting, catching, running, throwing, and cooperation skills. Focus is also on sportsmanship, leadership, and having fun.
- Track and Field: 100 meter sprint, relay, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discuss, high jump
- DPA: on days that we do not have a gym class, the class will participate in class aerobics, dancing, stretching, running, and outdoor obstacle courses.
TECHNOLOGY:
1.Computers
- Skills: general technological awareness, keyboarding, network awareness, researching, and word processing skills on Microsoft Word
- Students will work on creating Power Points
- Students will use the iPads for research, they will use new apps to assist with their learning and understanding, and they will use the iPads to show their learning in new and exciting ways
