Intermediate (Grade 6) Curriculum Content
Second Term: November 2015 to February 2016
Lara Davies – Grade 6 – Division 19
HUMANITIES
LANGUAGE ARTS
*Integrated with all other subjects requiring written expression. This includes creative writing, writing projects, research, and reading of narrative and informational texts.
1. Creative Writing:
a) Poetry: building skills in writing new forms of poetry; students will learn new poetic rhythms and expression using different poetic technique
*Poems covered will be: Alphabet Poem, Tagxedo Poem, Diamonte Poem, Bio-Poem, Haiku, and Tanka
b) Writing: building skills in writing compositions, learning purpose, form, composition, and publication
*Compositions that will be covered are: Narrative (stories, poems), Recounts (journal entries), Procedure (recipe), Report (news segment), and Exposition (perspectives)
2. Writing and Bookmaking: Using 6 + 1 Writing Traits
a) 6+1: learning, studying, and practicing the six main writing traits (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions)
b) Book: building skills in writing and illustrating books, sentence and paragraph compositions, research, and publication skills
*Towards the end of Term 2, students will be starting the Take a Vacation unit, during which they will create a new book that plans a trip to a country of their choice. This project encompasses many areas of the curriculum, including writing.
c) Planning: proofreading, editing, content, grammar, spelling, and presentation
3. Reading:
a) Novel Study: Independent Novel Study and Literature Circles
*class discussions, opinion and explanation, oral and silent reading, Socratic circles, Reading Power activities, visual interpretations, quote selection and analysis, theme, plot, setting, and character activities, response journals, vocabulary, definitions, final project
b) Reading Comprehension, Sequencing, and Inferring Activities
c) Novels: Recreational and Informational Books
*students choose from a wide variety of novels to read daily
d) Reading Power: continuing to learn and practice the strategies of Connect, Question, Visualize, Infer, and Transform
e) Figurative Language: students will use close reading activities to develop their understanding of various types of figurative language
FRENCH (Mrs. Weststrate):
SOCIAL STUDIES: Text: Global Citizens
1. Students are working from Global Citizens: reading, having classroom discussions, answering questions, completing assignments, and showing deeper understanding of the Global Citizen, Human Rights, and the United Nations.
2. Japan: students will be studying Japan; our studies begin with its geography, and move into various aspects of its culture through various stations. We will have a special celebration to culminate our learning from this unit.
3. Take a Vacation: this writing unit ties into Social Studies as students learn about their chosen country’s culture (religion, beliefs, customs, clothing, art, food, history, stories, language…), background, geography, and more. I expect that we will start this near the end of Term 2.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION:
1. Minor Games: general throwing, catching, aiming, sending and receiving skills; these skills, as well as group games and sportsmanship, will be focused on.
2. Basketball: shooting, passing, dribbling sending, receiving, team play and sportsmanship will be our focus for this unit.
3. DPA: on days that we do not have a gym class, the class will participate in class aerobics, dancing, stretching, running, and outdoor obstacle courses.
COMPUTER:
1. Skills: general technological awareness, keyboarding, network awareness, and word processing skills
2. Power Point: students will learn the Power Point program and create at least one assignment that they will use for a class presentation (tied into our 6 + 1 Writing Unit); it may also be used for their home reading task assignment
3. FreshGrade: students are using this program to share and celebrate their learning opportunities and assessments, as well as explain procedures and areas learning which present difficulty
4. Coding: students will be introduced to the skill of coding and they will have the opportunity to earn certificates as they complete a certain amount of hours of practice
FINE ARTS:
1. Art: Students will engage in a variety of art activities around the concepts of colour, line, design, shape, tone, balance, and contrast. They will also use a variety of techniques, as well as different mediums, including felts, pencil crayons, and pastels to create different projects this term.
2. Music (Mrs. Weststrate): Students will be participating in weekly acoustic guitar lessons, focusing on proper body posture, chord progression, and strumming techniques. This will also involve active participation with choral singing. Some basic music theory will be incorporated into our repertoire of songs.
3. Drama: Music and art are the main focus for second term. Drama will be the focus in third term.
Health and Career Education (H.A.C.E.):
1. Assignments: Student will complete a variety of assignments that have them focus on developing social awareness and communication skills
*Students will also complete tasks that focus on the skills of listening and following directions
2. Homework Completion: Students are expected to show responsibility and personal organization by having their homework completed on time
3. Agendas: Students are expected to complete their agenda accurately each day, and have a parent initial it to show that their homework has been completed.
4. Personal Organization: Student are expected to keep their desk area and coat room area tidy, return forms on time, and have their binders and work kept in an orderly manner.
5. S.O.A.R.: Students will participate in this drug awareness program (replaces D.A.R.E.) by participating in lessons and activities taught by the teachers and the R.C.M.P.
6. Genius Hour & Passion Projects: Students are setting goals for learning about a topic that they are passionate about. Through exploration and experience, this project will help them to work on big ideas from the new curriculum.
SCIENCES
Mathematics: Text: Math Makes Sense 6 (Units 5, 6, and 7)
I will be using Project Based Learning (PBL) to enhance the curriculum and teach concepts in a more engaging and meaningful way.
1. Cookie Exchange:
Fractions and Percent – Mixed numbers, converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions, comparing mixed numbers and improper fractions, exploring percent, relating fractions, decimals, and percent
2. Field Trip to Space:
Geometry and Measurement – Exploring triangles, naming and sorting triangles by angles, drawing triangles, investigating polygons, congruence in regular polygons, perimeters of polygons, area of a rectangle, and volume of a rectangular prism
Data Analysis and Probability: using a questionnaire to gather data, conducting experiments to gather data, interpreting graphs, drawing graphs, choosing an appropriate graph, theoretical probability, and experimental probability
Note: in this PBL we will also be reviewing decimals and money

- Students will be completing a thematic unit on The Body. Learning how to read and write simple sentences in French will be our focus, but we can't forget to leave time for some fun French activities, games, and songs.
